Cheerfully ever after in the Central District

An significant work of art created by the subject of our very very first Central District News report (Pic courtesy Mom)

For one final post, Central District News is glad to report that everyone lived cheerfully ever after.

The very first time I read the CD news was while attempting to make sense out of the worst and best twenty four hours of my life: October 31, 2007. I was walking to work with my mom and my stroller roped just-turned-one son. Crossing 23rd at Marion there was a car across the way so we waited for them. They werenʼt signaling nor moving even however the coast was clear so we assumed they were waiting for us. Not the case-must have been dispelled. When we were 1/Two way across the street, the car made a quick left. Understand this all happened pretty darned rapid and gets a little nutty so Iʼll proceed chronologically.

I spotted the car, screamed something along the lines of “stop!”and got inbetween it and the stroller (as if I could stop it, right?). I was struck and thrown over the car which proceeded to run over the stroller and haul it under the car about thirty feet, veering left and running up the curb and into the steps of the corner house. Thatʼs where it was when I came to, looking for my son. My mom, in some stage of disintegration, directed me to where the stroller was. All that could be seen was crushed metal under the car. Unnecessary to say I fell apart. I believe I was on the ground hysterical, tearing clumps of grass out, when my mom alerted me to a babyʼs howling.

There was this weird moment of what do we do? Could we lift a car? What would meet our eyes when we did? Then this youthful man, maybe a teenager, maybe in his 20ʼs, came right up to me and said “do you want us to lift that car?” “yes”. Then it was all forearms on-residents of the corner house, construction workers from across the street, myself and my mom.

When we pulled the entirely collapsed/smashed stroller out there was a little smudge of oil on my sonʼs forehead where the bottom of the car was touching him. Thatʼs it.

The next twenty four hours was packed with a lot of testing at the hospital. Not joy but worth realizing that as unbelievable as it seemed, my son was unharmed.

My boy is now a seven year old big brother and is living a utter and active life. Like a lot of kids his age he fancies himself invincible so the time hasnʼt fairly arrived for us to tell him what happened. When that time comes, I plan on digging out that very first story from the CD news to help him put this crazy puzzle together.

In the blurry days following this incident I scanned news sources attempting to make sense of what had happened. The most helpful and human coverage was found in the CD news. Iʼve been reading it ever since. Thank you CD news for providing such valuable asset to our community. Youʼll be missed.

Thanks for reading, everybody, and thanks for sharing your stories.

Roots & Renegades Pacific Northwest Wine Tasting

April Showers bring fresh wine releases along with the blossoms. This Saturday we’ll be pouring some fresh wines from Sleight of Palm Cellars’ Renegade Wines from Walla Walla and Roots Winery out of the Willamette. It is a fresh and spring-like lineup that will make you bloom.

2013 Sleight of Arm, Renegade Rose $11

79% Syrah, 14% Cinsault, 7% Counoise The grapes were pressed directly after harvesting, and the juice was drained to stainless steel tanks, where the wine was fermented at a cool temperature to retain the fresh fruit characters of the final product. It has wonderful aromas of fresh pomegranates and citrus, some sweet crimson berries, and even rhubarb. This wine will be the ideal pairing with a fresh beet salad and crumbled goat cheese, or grilled salmon on your deck.

2011 Roots, Melon de Bourgogne

Roots is a seven acre estate in the Yamhill-Carlton district of the Willamette. Run by Chris Berg, Roots is an under the radar starlet of Oregon Pinot. Their Mellon de Bourgogne (otherwise known as Muscadet) sourced from Deux Vert vineyard picks up a bit more bod than its European cousin, but retains the that crisp freshness that goes superb with shellfish.

2012 Roots, Klee Pinot Noir $20

In homage to one of Chris’ dearest artists Klee (named after Paul Klee), is a fresh and imaginative Pinot Noir. The grapes are sourced from various vineyards, and at $20 is an amazing value for the Willamette.

2012 Sleight of Palm, Renegade Crimson $11

40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot The Crimson drinks like a Washington State Cabernet-based blend, with lots of crimson and black fruits, scents of loamy minerality, and fine grained tannins that are matched with balanced acidity.

2012 Sleight of Arm, Renegade Mourvedre $16

Only four barrels, or ninety eight cases of this wine, were made. Mourvedre is normally a minor blending grape in the Rhone Valley, but here in Washington (especially off The Rocks area in Walla Walla), it is worthy of being bottled on its own.

Madrona Wine Merchants offers free wine tastings featuring 4-5 selections on a theme every Saturday from two until the bottles run out and on Sunday we suggest a mini-tasting of two wines all day from 11-5. No matter what day you stop by we always have something open to sample.

Old World/Fresh World: Pinot Gris/Pinot Noir

This Saturday we’ll be doing a little compare and contrast of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir pitting the home team up against a duo of European stalwarts. Come detect the beauty and strengths of both worlds.

2013 Lorelle Pinot Grigio $Ten

Lorelle is the 2nd label for J. Albin Winery of Hillsboro, Orogon. John Albin has been growing pinot noir from his estate Laurel Vineyard since one thousand nine hundred eighty one and is the former winemaker/vineyard manager for King Estate. The Grigio is an outstanding value at $Ten. The fresh vintage has just been released. Come and see what it’s like.

2010 Diehl, Grauer Burgunder one ltr. $12

Weingut Diehl sits at the foot of the Württemberge Mountains amid the picturesque countryside, surrounded by vineyards and a fascinating view of the Stuttgart basin. The Diehls embarked making their own wine rather than selling their grapes in 1972. They use selective arm picking and a gentle winemaking, which blends tradition and modern enology. The Grauer Burgunder is all Pinot Gris and a world apart.

2012 Mas de Boislauzon, Chaussynette Rosé $9

Every match off needs an intermission. This Rosé from a 5th generation Chateau Neuf du Papes winemaking family should prove a excellent diversion. With the two thousand thirteen vintage of Rosés rolling into the market we are finding some two thousand twelve wines left at a excellent prices. Was $15 now $9

2012 Lorelle Pinot Noir $15

It is hard to strike the Lorelle Pinot Noir for value. This solid, fresh and clean Pinot is from the exceptional two thousand twelve vintage in the Willamette drinks amazingly well without being overly plain.

2011 Domaine Camus-Bruchon, Savigny-Pimentiers Vieilles Vignes $40

Lucien Camus-Bruchon, his wifey Bernadette and their son Guillaume farm some 9.Two hectares of vines, mostly Pinot Noir. Lucien took over from his father in one thousand nine hundred seventy one and he’s the sixth generation, son Bill is the 7th. This Vieilles Vignes bottling comes from a single vineyard of eighty nine year old vines. It is a beautiful Pinot with sweet cherry aromas, dry, hard fruit and elegance and minerality with an epic length and depth on the finish. It is a classic Burgundy.

Madrona Wine Merchants offers free wine tastings featuring 4-5 selections on a theme every Saturday from two until the bottles run out and on Sunday we suggest a mini-tasting of two wines all day from 11-5. No matter what day you stop by we always have something open to sample.

Fresh Releases from Animale Wine Tasting

Far away in the deep upper reaches of a land known as Ballard, Matt Gubitosa toils away in petite cautiously organized cellar, leisurely crafting the wines called ANIMALE. The wines are intense and utter flavored made from select vineyards in Eastern Washington where well-drained soils, cool nights, low yields, puny berry size, limited irrigation, and late harvests result in special grapes that make unusually elaborate wines. Grapes you won’t find in your typical CMS Washington blend. Come by on Saturday, meet Matt, and attempt the fresh wines of his two thousand eleven vintage.

2011 Dolcetto – Columbia Valley $25

This Piedmontese grape finds a fresh home on Waluke Slope. It shows intense cherry aromas and flavors with a soft but protracted finish. Twenty four cases produced

2011 Tempranillo – Yakima Valley $25

This classic Spanish varietal takes on a fresh persona in Prosser. The Tempranillo is tangy and lithe, elaborate and intriguing. Twenty four cases produced

2011 Petite Sirah – Yakima Valley $26

From a vineyard in Sunnyside planted especially for ANIMALE, the two thousand eleven Petite Sirah is a muscular wine with burly tannins stashing underneath its dark total fruit. Twenty four cases produced

2011 Carmenere – Crimson Mountain $25

Thirty two cases produced
