In total, seven people have perished in car wrecks since Tuesday and of those, four youthful women might have been saved if they had been restrained, officials said.

Police Chief William McManus said the latest casualties illustrate the need for continued concentrate on seat belt use and what can happen when drivers are dispelled.

«If you’re a very first responder and you see these grisly crashes it’s a stark, stark, horrible reminder how significant seat belts are,» McManus said.

The department regularly participates in the yearly Click It or Ticket program, but McManus said an extra initiative is being put in place targeting teenagers.

At the commence of Spring Break, teenage drivers who are unrestrained, texting or dispelled while driving could get a hard lesson from the SAPD, McManus said. The traffic unit will be watching for, and if necessary, citing teenage drivers who crack the law.

So far this year, there have been thirteen fatal crashes in which seat belts weren’t worn or investigators couldn’t say if they were worn.

In two thousand eleven and 2012, there were thirty one and thirty seven fatalities, respectively, SAPD statistics display.

In the most latest crash, the two women were in a Chevrolet Trailblazer speeding in the turnaround lane of the eastbound Interstate ten access road near Ramsgate Street when the truck went straight instead of turning on a curve and crashed into a concrete wall.

The SUV went airborne off a bridge and landed upside-down on the ramp to Wurzbach Road about Three:17 a.m., police said.

The passenger died at the scene, and the driver died at University Hospital.

Whether the SUV’s driver had been drinking is being investigated.

Neither woman was wearing a seat belt, but police said the driver might have survived if she had been strapped in. The same was said for two Brandeis High students who crashed Tuesday, as well as another teenage in a Wednesday wreck.

Ever since very first adopting a seat belt law in the late 1980s, Texas has consistently been one of the top states in the nation for restraint use, studies showcase.

In 2011, Texas had ninety three percent seat-belt use, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Still, those ages 15-20 are less likely to wear the restraints, the national statistics point out. That combined with a teenager’s sense of indestructibility can be a dangerous combination, McManus said.

He recommends parents regularly remind their children about driving safety.

The chief also will be a part of the Shattered Desires program this month at MacArthur High School. The program aims to educate teenagers on the influence of crashes, whether fatal or not, with demonstrations, displaying movies and having speakers affected by wrecks.

And on Tuesday, police were at Johnson High School to speak to students there about dispersed driving.

It was the same day Brandeis students Gabriella Lerma, 17, and Georgina «Gina» Rodriguez, sixteen – were fatally injured in a wreck. Lerma and Rodriguez were railing in the back unrestrained; the surviving driver and front passenger were wearing seat belts.

On Wednesday night, Andrea Reyna, 16, died just hours after getting her very first car when she spinned over and was ejected from the car. She, too, was not wearing her seat belt.

The other two fatal crashes also came Tuesday but seat belts weren’t a factor.

A trucker was killed in a flamy wreck about three a.m. after he evidently fell asleep and drove off Interstate ten near Ralph Fair Road, hitting a sign and rolling over. He hasn’t been identified.

Cedrych Carrisalez, Nineteen, was run over by a drunken-driving suspect in a parking lot near Mulberry Avenue and St. Mary’s Street.

«How many times have we heard that drinking and driving is dangerous, that not wearing seat belts is dangerous or that speeding is dangerous?» McManus said. «And my response is they think ‘it won’t happen to me.’ Don’t ever, ever think it’s not going to happen to you.»
