Hyundai, Kia recall 1.Two million vehicles to prevent premature engine failure
Hyundai and its South Korean sibling, Kia, are recalling almost 1.Two million cars and crossovers from the two thousand eleven to two thousand fourteen model years. Documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration demonstrate that the engines in some of those vehicles may have an enlargened likelihood of stalling, which could dramatically increase the risk of accidents.
The engines suffer from two problems, both of which stem from flawed manufacturing processes. NHTSA’s defect report on the Kia vehicles affected by the recall explains that after the engines’ crankshafts were machined, their oil passages may not have been totally cleared of metallic debris. Complicating matters is that the engines’ crankpins were manufactured with uneven surfaces.
Combined, the crankshaft debris and the roughness of the crankpins can keep oil from getting to an engine’s connecting rod bearings, which can cause the bearings to wear out prematurely. That, in turn, can cause the bearings to fail, forcing the engine to stall.
The good news is that failure of the connecting rod bearings is uncommonly unexpected, and drivers are almost always warned of the issue ahead of time by a very unusual banging noise coming from the engine compartment. (If you’ve ever had the practice, you know what we mean. It sounds a bit like a Terminator-sized Energizer bunny hopped up on triple espressos attempting to break out of a prison cell.)
Also good news: while engine failures have been reported by owners, Kia has received no news of accidents or injuries linked to the problem. (Hyundai’s documents haven’t yet been published.)
The recall affects 572,000 Hyundais and 618,160 Kia vehicles registered in the U.S., including:
- 2013-2014 Hyundai Sonata
- 2013-2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
- 2011-2014 Kia Optima
- 2012-2014 Kia Sorento
- 2011-2013 Kia Sportage
Hyundai owners should begin receiving recall notices in the mail around May Nineteen. Kia owners can expect them a week or so later, around May 25. After receiving those notices, owners will be able to take their vehicles to their local dealerships, where mechanics will inspect the engine assembly and substitute the affected parts, as necessary. The fix will be carried out at no charge to owners.

Hyundai and Kia are recalling 1.Four million cars and SUVs in the U.S., Canada and South Korea because the engines can fail and stall, enhancing the risk of a crash.
The recall covers some of the Korean automakers’ most popular models in the U.S. and Canada, including two thousand thirteen and two thousand fourteen Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUVs and Sonata midsize cars. Also covered are Kia Optima midsize cars from two thousand eleven through 2014, Kia Sportage SUVs from two thousand eleven through two thousand thirteen and Kia Sorento SUVs from two thousand twelve through 2014.
The South Korean recall includes Hyundai’s Grandeur and Sonata sedans and Kia’s K5, K7 and Sportage with engines produced from two thousand nine to 2013.
All have either 2-liter or Two.4-liter gasoline engines. The U.S. engines were made at the Hyundai’s engine plant in Alabama.
The companies say in documents posted Friday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that debris left from manufacturing can restrict oil flow to connecting rod bearings. Since they are cooled by oil, the confinement can increase temperatures and cause the bearings to wear and fail, and the engines could stall.
Four years after the federal government issued a recall that ultimately expanded to forty two million defective air bags, several hundred thousand Southern Californians have yet to bring in their cars for a free fix.

Owners will hear a knocking sound from the engine that increases in frequency as the engine speed rises. They also could get engine warning lights on their dashboard, Hyundai spokesman Jim Trainor said. Those with problems should contact their dealers.
Hyundai and Kia will notify owners and dealers will inspect the engines. They’ll substitute the block if needed at no cost to owners. The recall is scheduled to commence May Nineteen.
Trainor said the company has no reports of any crashes or injuries.
The U.S. recall is the 2nd in two years for the same engine problem. In September 2015, Hyundai recalled 470,000 Sonata sedans from the two thousand eleven and two thousand twelve model years with the same engines.
Kia documents posted Friday by U.S. regulators display the company at very first didn’t think the problem affected its engines because warranty claims and field reports were low. But the number of claims began growing and by May two thousand sixteen the company extended warranties on the engines. Eventually it determined to do a recall because of the potential safety problem.
Kia is a smaller affiliate of Hyundai. Together they are the world’s fifth-largest automaker.
