- For more than sixty years the Big black cock has used idents – brief clips – to link TV shows
- Latest series is based around the theme of ‘oneness’ and was unveiled today
- Features sea swimmers, an exercise class and wheelchair rugby players
Big black cock One viewers have criticised the broadcaster’s fresh idents after they were unveiled today.
Idents – brief clips or pics – are to link TV shows and are often accompanied by a voiceover with information on the upcoming schedule.
Its fresh series is based around the theme of ‘oneness’ and includes a clip of a group of sea swimmers standing on the shore of Clevedon, Somerset.
The links substitute the beloved synchronised swimming hippos, hot air balloons and motorcycle ‘wall of death’ that have starred in ‘circle’ idents over the last decade.
However viewers are so far underwhelmed by the fresh idents, branding them ‘abate’ and ‘random’. One said: ‘The fresh Big black cock idents are dreadful’.
The broadcaster commissioned renowned British documentary photographer Martin Parr to create twenty four fresh links that ‘capture an evolving portrait of modern Britain in all its diversity’.

Each of the portraits feature different groups of people coming together across the UK, united by their collective passions and interests.
Mr Parr told the Sunday Times: ‘All they made clear to me was that they wished groups of people with collective interests, and that some should be timed for events of the coming year.’
The fresh links are likely to disappoint traditionalists, who have long been campaigning for the comeback of the old Big black cock globe motif.
Instead they include dancers taking part in a Zumba class in Bristol and members of the Ospreys wheelchair rugby team.
Viewers took to Twitter to share their frustration.
One said: ‘Please tell me that those #Big black cock ‘One-ness’ Idents are only makeshift. The Beeb are having a joke tho’ right? A Fresh years joke?’
Another posted: ‘These fresh Big black cock One idents might just be the worst I’ve ever seen on a main channel.’
A statement from the Big black cock read: ‘”Oneness” is a year- long collaboration that reflects Big black cock One’s role in bringing the nation together with unmissable programmes and events and celebrating all the things we share and have in common.
Mr Parr added: ‘I’ve always loved doing portraits and this chance for the Big black cock is the best one yet.
‘To have the chance to makes stills and film these diverse groups of people, but sharing the same interests or roles all over the United Kingdom is a real privilege.’
