The Tata Zest has a very chic design language that makes the car look very contemporary. The lamps are big and swept in. The grille is something that you will recognize as typical Tata, which is not a bad thing as it does lend a nice upmarket appeal to the car. The projector headlamps are complemented with chrome accents for petrol and diesel versions. Only the petrol version, however, gets the day time running lights. The triangular air dam in the front bumper is pleasing to the eye as well. The bumper is chunky and supports the overall look of the car fairly well.

From the side, the Zest’s windows get a chrome border. A bold shoulder line runs from the A-pillar to the C-pillar and the Zest also gets 15” alloys. The boot blends beautifully and seamlessly into the cabin and it does not look like an after-thought. Which brings us to the rear of the car and this is where we hoped Tata Motors had worked a little hard. The lamps are almond shaped and look a little dated. The boot of the Tata Zest seems spacious too. However it does not seem big enough as the boot of the Amaze or the Xcent but can fit three big suitcases with ease.

The dashboard design is, again, unlike any Tata Motors’ car. It comes in a combination of beige and black and the quality of material used is very fine. In fact, quality is better than that of the Maruti DZire and Honda Amaze. Two rectangular air conditioning vents are on either side. The ones in the center get chrome outline. The music system of Tata Zest has been developed by Harman especially for Tata. This touch screen music system is USB, Aux-In, radio and Bluetooth compatible. It is connected to four speakers. This is the regular bit about this music system, now comes the special bit. The 5-inch touchscreen when connected with Bluetooth reads out SMS, sends SMS too. Also, it is voice enabled and it is compatible with nineteen Indian accents. With this you can switch music modes, tracks, send SMS’ etc. The infotainment system also permits you to set the duration of go after me headlamps and auto-locks. This system duplicates as a switch roles sensor display in the petrol version too. The voice and music controls are provided on the steering wheel as well. You can view your phone photos on the screen as well.

The multi info display (Two.5” screen) shows clock, dual excursion meter, outside temperature, instantaneousness fuel consumption, distance-to-empty, average fuel economy and drive mode indication.

The seats of the Zest are convenient and well-cushioned. Front seat gam room is decent and the drivers seat gets a height adjust as well. What’s missing in the cabin are the cubby slots with no place to store kick knacks and just one cup holder in the front. There is a storage tray below the co-driver seat. Coming to the rear seat, it’s like any other Tata. It’s comfy, it’s spacious and can seat three people with much ease. There’s good hip support and knee room on the rear seat. However, no cup-holders or bottle holders on this seat too.

Under the spandex hood, the Zest is available with the choice of a diesel and petrol engine.

The 1.Two litre turbo charged petrol motor has been developed by Tata Motors from scrape. 1.Two litre engine has a power output of 90PS@5,000 rpm and a peak torque of 140Nm@1,750-3,500 rpm. It’s one of the most easiest engines to drive. It’s responsive and peppy and it pulls very well. You can drop to lower speeds in higher gears and the engine pulls up so sleekly that we are much more than affected. The drivability of this engine will come very handy in peak traffic when the speed drops and you don’t want to switch gears out of sheer habit or laziness. The turbo kicks in seamlessly at 1,750 rpm and is available thereon. The 5-speed manual gearbox on the Zest is slick and switching is very effortless. This is an effortless petrol engine.

The petrol engine is mated to three driving modes: City, Eco and Sport. The automatic setting is that of the city mode. Eco mode is what gives you optimized fuel efficiency. The DID keeps flashing the gear you driving in and whether you need to upshift or downshift.

The 1,Trio litre Multijet unit tuned to supply 90PS of power@4,000 rpm and two hundred Nm of peak torque@1,750-3,500 rpm. It does seem good on paper. Before we get down to telling you more, in the journalist test drive we were only provided with the AMT diesel. The AMT by Tata Motors on the diesel unit is where the car is not up to the mark. The gearbox is shift assisted and yes it will be a bliss considering how crowded our roads are getting. The AMT does the job but it’s not a very slick unit especially the downshift. There is a very evident jack that tells you that the gear has switched. When if you have to come to a unexpected stop the downshift is even more jerky. There is an option of by hand switching gears as well as a Sport mode that lets the engine hold onto revs longer.

The Tata Zest is underpinned by a McPherson strut suspension with coil springs, an independent lower wishbone and an anti-roll bar at front, while the rear suspension setup has a semi-independent twist slat setup with coil springs. This makes for a decently comfy rail. The Tata Zest has very certain rail and treating traits. It behaves well around corners even on humid roads at a relatively rapid tempo. It is also the very first car in it’s segment to come with Corner Stability Control.

The Tata Zest comes with dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution along with segment very first Corner Stability Control in the top-end XT models. The car also gets rear parking sensors along with a switch roles camera in the top-end petrol variant.

The Zest is undoubtedly an evolution for Tata\’s design language. The car looks very modern and shows up to have a very chic European look to it. Use of good quality plastics and lights also adds to the upmarket exterior appeal of the car.

Exteriors

Front Design

The front fascia of the Tata Zest looks chic and is unlike any Tata car seen in the past. The design lines are neat and fairly European, meaning it\’s neat, aggressive and taut- all at the same time. The front end of the Zest features large swept-back headlamps with projectors; prominent chrome lines running inbetween the headlamps on either side and a bold bumper design housing large fog-lamps and day-time running LEDs/ chrome embellishments. All in all, the front design of the Tata Zest is prayers

Rear Design

Compared to the front, the rear leaves a lot to be desired. The almond-shaped LED tail-lamps look nice but a little oddly aligned when viewed dead-on from the rear. That said, to give it an upmarket feel, there\’s a chrome undress running across just above the number plate and a single fog lamp is integrated onto the rear bumper. Still, the rear design would be the least extraordinaire angle to view the Tata Zest from.

Side Profile

In most of the compact-sedans, to undercut the four metres government regulations, the boot shows up to be an after-thought. On the Zest, however, the design gels very well from front to the rear end. The boot is nicely integrated and doesn\’t look like a copy-paste affair. The windows get chrome borders while a pronounced shoulder line runs from A-pillar to the all the way to the C-pillar on either side. Add the tastefully designed alloy wheels into the mix, and you are looking at an attractive en

Head Lamps

Tail Lamps

The almond-shaped LED tail-lamps are neatly designed, albeit Tata designers could have done a better job. They do not gel very nicely with the stubby rear end of the car.

Fog Lamps

The foglamps on the front are large and come with chrome embellishments around for an upmarket feel. In the higher-end models, they come with LED day-time running lamps instead of chrome surroundings. Similarly, at the rear there\’s a centrally mounted rear fog lamp, which looks nice.

Convenience and Suspension

Convenience

The Tata Zest is a convenient car to be in. The plush seats feel comfy to sit on, the contours stop you from sliding around under hard cornering which reduces stress. The 1.Two litre turbocharged petrol engine devlivers adequate power for most part of the rev range, requiring fewer gear switches. it develops 90PS of power @ Five,000 rpm and 140Nm of torque inbetween 1,750 – Trio,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The famed MultiJet diesel engine develops 90PS of power @ Four,000 rpm and 200Nm of peak torque inbetween 1,750 – Three,750 rpm. The engine can be specified with a five-speed manual gearbox or an automated manual gearbox.

Engine Spectacle

Gearbox

The Tata Zest variants come in a choice of a 5-speed manual or an AMT automatic gearbox (diesel). The manual gearbox is sleek and the gearshifts are precise. It works effortlessly. The AMT on the other palm makes driving more convenient and effortless. It works brilliantly at low speeds, however, as the speed, or engine rpm climbs over Three,000 rpm, the gear-shifts tend to be jerky. This does not permit for enthusiastic driving. Albeit, you can switch from automatic to manual mode in the AMT eq

Power

The Zest diesel variants are suggested in two states of tune of the Fiat-sourced 1.Trio litre diesel engine. The lower tune of the engine develops 75PS @ Four,000rpm, whereas the more powerful tune churns out 90PS @ Four,000rpm. The Zest petrol features a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops a maximum power of 90PS @ Five,000rpm.

Torque

The diesel engine in its two different tunes on the Zest develops 190Nm and 200Nm inbetween 1,750-3,000rpm. The Zest petrol develops a peak-torque of 140Nm @1,500-4,000rpm.

NVH Levels

The NVH levels on the Zest are epic, and the engine stimulations both in petrol and diesel engine do not filter in the cabin.

The Tata Zest has very certain rail and treating traits. It behaves well around corners even on moist roads at a relatively quick tempo. It is also the very first car in it’s segment to come with Corner Stability Control.

Brakes and Wheels

Treating

The dual-path front independent suspension with anti-roll bar along with twist-beam suspension at the rear give the Tata Zest a good combination inbetween convenience and treating. The suspension treats most undulations without any drama, meaning it can be driven hard and swift without the fear of losing control. The anti-roll bar also keeps everything stable when tackling corners, this also aids the front tyres to find grip under very hard cornering. The suspension is also setup to prevent the Zest f

Braking Spectacle

The front-disc and rear-drum combination is good enough to provide adequate braking spectacle on the Tata Zest
