Auto Express all-season tyre test 2015
For the very first time in the UK, Auto Express has undertaken a tyre test targeted at the all-season tyres on the market.
Winter weather in the UK can prove to be erratic and at times we can love four seasons in one day. The category of all-season tyre has developed over the past decade to ensure that no matter what the weather is like, your tyres will be best suited to dealing with the trials of the road.
To include a benchmark against the top all-season tyres on the market, Auto Express also included the tyres that they announced the best spectacle in winter and summer earlier this year.
All Season Tyre Test: The Track
To ensure that the tyres were tested in suitable conditions, the Auto Express testers took to the specially designed ‘White Hell’ proving ground in Ivalo, Finland wielded by Nokian for the for the snow tests.
For the other aspects of the tyre tests – the cold, raw and dry – they then used Continental’s Contidrom facility outside Hanover, Germany.

All in all, eight tyres were tested in size 205/55 R16 each on a broad range of family cars. The tyres tested were:
All Season Tyre Test: The Criteria
To ensure that they covered all the potential difficulties that a drivers comes up against, each tyre was tested in thirteen key areas:
- Snow circle
- Snow traction
- Snow braking
- Snow treating
- Moist braking
- Humid treating
- Raw circle
- Straight aquaplaning
- Curved aquaplaning
- Dry braking
- Dry treating
- Noise
- Rolling resistance
- Price
All Season Tyre Test: The Result
In latest years, the design and technology investment that has gone into creating tyres that can treat the switching weather via the year has enhanced. Auto Express’s own testers remarked that “the latest designs have amazing grip on snow and matched our winter tyre comparison in the mild humid conditions.”
For some however, there is still a slight blemish when it comes to the milder weather, with the tyres tested still trailing behind the summer tyre on the dry tests.
However, it was in fact an all-season tyre that came out on top of the tests overall, and it was good news for Nokian tyres, with their Nokian Weatherproof taking the top spot:
