It runs! Gene and I fired up the 440 about 2 weeks ago. So far so good. It seems to run good but we need to do some tuning on it. The carb is brand new from Summit racing. It’s an Edelbrock 750 with an electric choke. I used an Edelbrock intake manifold too. Gene was wondering about it so I did some checking online. I forgot what number it is but according to a couple Mopar websites I visited it’s a desirable unit. Picked it up from a guy who knows Jason Carrol over at Heads By Paul. It’s a ‘Dual Plane’ manifold. I guess it has been around since the late 50’s and a lot of people like it. Used on the old 413 at one time.
Gene re-worked the exhaust for better flow and we used Flowmaster mufflers. It is loud! Sounds good though. For now we are using the stock ignition set-up but will switch to a MSD unit later. One issue we came up against was the water pump housing. Originally the lower hose came out on the driver’s side but the 440 I rebuilt has it on the passenger side. Gene re-worked the hose to run over to the right side (passenger) Gene also re-worked the fuel tank pick-up. For some reason it did not work in the new tank so Gene modified it by off the pick-up tube and replacing it with a hose. It works and so does the fuel gauge.
Speaking of gauges, the oil pressure gauge does not work. This is weird because it worked before. Don’t worry, we’ve got oil pressure-60 psi when cold. I will try to pull the gauge out of the cluster and see hats wrong. Gene says we do not have continuity across the gauge. Tony at Mopar Masters has a Rallye Cluster but of course it’s worth some money. It does have a tach which would be nice. We’ll see. I had to pick up some odds and ends from Tony already including a throttle cable. The original is in pretty bad shape so I picked one up. The one I got from Tony is shorter but he says it will work. I also had to pick up a fuel filler neck. I lost my old one someplace. I also needed some throttle linkage stuff including the return spring bracket and the throttle bracket. I’ve got them all painted up and ready to go on.
I called Steve about scheduling the paint job but he didn’t call me back. I bet he is swamped. I’m going to fit the doors, fenders and hood next. That’s the big news for now.
